How to Get Proximity Chat in League of Legends

Proximity chat is a beloved feature in many online games, whether it's built natively into the game or added by the community through mods, which is exactly the case here.

It's important to note that this is a mod created by a content creator, not an official Riot Games feature. That said, Riot has announced that they are working on team voice chat. In this article, we'll cover the proximity chat mod, the creators behind the idea, and whether it's currently available for the public to use.

Who Made It?

The proximity chat mod was built by SkinSpotlights, whose software reads player positions and passes them through a Discord plugin to adjust voice volume based on in-game distance. Streamer Dumbs then took that and ran with it, hosting a custom game featuring some of League's most well-known content creators like Keshaeuw, Drututt, Spearshot, and others.

You've probably already seen clips of it floating around on Reels or TikTok, as the original post racked up nearly a million views.

Sadly, if you were hoping to get your hands on it, Dumbs has said he can't share the server-side software, joking that Riot assassins would be at his door if he did, so for now it's not something you can just download and set up on your own.

We're Still Getting Voice Chat in League of Legends

This has been the biggest talking point in the League community lately. Back in February, during a PBE update, dataminers discovered new references to voice chat within the game files, including an option to report players for "voice comms abuse."

After that, Riot confirmed it. Meddler, Senior Vice President at Riot Games, confirmed they do have work on voice chat going on, but that it was leaked before they were ready to talk about it, and that it's not going live anytime soon. So it's confirmed, and it's being worked on, just don't expect it to drop in the next patch.

In Conclusion

The proximity chat mod isn't available to the public for now, and it might stay that way. But with Riot already confirmed to be working on team voice chat, an official solution is on the way. It might not be proximity chat, but it's a start.
